William Charles Poppel

William Charles Poppel, 79, of Old Saybrook, died Saturday, July 5, 2003 at Gladeview Convalescent Home in Old Saybrook after a short illness. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late William and Ruth Olson Poppel. He was a former Kensington resident before moving to Old Saybrook 40 years ago. He was formerly employee for many years at SNET before retirement. William was a in US Navy Veteran of World War II, serving as a Tail Gunner. He was a avid boater and fisherman. Surviving are two sisters, Marcelyn King of Plainville and Marguerite Defanti of Wells, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brother, Clifford Poppel and Philip Poppel. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held at West Lane Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is serving the family.
