Verna Calmbach MacMillian, 95, of Farmington, wife of the late Bruce S. MacMillian, Sr., passed away on Thursday January 27, 2011 at UCONN Health Center. Born in New Britain, CT, Verna was the only child of George and Signe Johnson Calmbach. Verna graduated from Central Connecticut State College where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree with honors; she received her Master of Arts Degree in English from Trinity College, and completed her sixth year of graduate work at Boston University. In 1965 Verna was appointed Principal of Sedgwick Junior High School in West Hartford; as such she became the first woman principal of a secondary school in West Hartford. Prior to this appointment she was the director of secondary education and supervisor of the English Department for the West Hartford School System. Before coming to West Hartford, Verna was chairman of the English department and drama director for the Plainville CT School System. Verna was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honor society for women educators, member and past president of the Mark Twain Masquers, and a fifty plus year celebrant of the First Church of Christ Congregational of Farmington. Verna retired to Pompano Beach, FL in 1971 where she lived happily until her return to CT in 2004 to be closer to her family. Verna is survived by her son: Bruce S. MacMillian and his wife, Jerri, of Essex, CT; three grandsons: Bruce S.MacMillian, III and his wife, Karen of West Hartford, Travis M. MacMillian and his wife, Andrea, of Plymouth, MA and Loyal G. MacMillian of Karlsruhe, Germany; as well as five great grandsons: Brian, Zachary and Tyler MacMillian of West Hartford and Sebastian and Alexander MacMillian of Plymouth, MA. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 31, 2011 at the First Church of Christ Congregational 75 Main Street, Farmington, CT.
