Valerian J. Piera Jr.

Valerian J. Piera Jr (Val), 83, of Middletown, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020 at Hartford Hospital.

Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Valerian James Piera and Lucy (Uccello) Piera.  Val was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy. He grew up and lived in New Britain before moving to Middletown 20 years ago.  He was formerly employed at Emhart/Black and Decker in Berlin before retiring.  An avid hunter and fisherman, Val was a member of the New Britain Hunting and Fishing Club where he had served as secretary and comptroller and enjoyed the sport with his cousins and friends.  Val also enjoyed playing pool and played on many leagues. He enjoyed gardening, yard work and loved to cook for his family. His favorite thing to do was to sit at the dinner table surrounded by his family, all of whom will miss him terribly.

Val is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Flematti) Piera; his daughter, Christina Gautieri and her husband William of Old Saybrook; two grandchildren, Leah and Kevin Gautieri; a brother, Joe Piera of Bethel; his cousin and best buddy, Harold Gannon; his dog Cooper, who was always by his side; as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his son, Valerian James Piera III.

A private funeral service will be held.  Burial will be in Maple Cemetery.  There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.   Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, New Britain, is in charge of arrangements.
