Salvatore G. D’Alfonso, 83 years old, passed away on February 7, 2022, with his family by his side. Sal was born in Priolo, Italy, and moved to the US with his family when he was 17. They settled in New Britain, where he met his wife, the former Stella Ouellette.
In a new country, unable to speak or read the language (or read the road signs), he was quickly able to get a job as a brick mason on his 2 nd day in the US. He learned the English language, made many friends, and eventually became a skilled brick mason. After marrying Stella, they both worked long, hard hours, providing a warm, welcoming home for their family and guests.
Sal was a fabulous soccer player, starting at the age of 5, and played for the Generale Ameglio Society against outstanding competition locally and in Europe. He continued to play well into his 70’s. He also shared his athletic expertise with the community, coaching soccer and baseball for many area children.
Although Sal worked as a mason, he doubled as an outstanding chef. His pasta sauce, sausage, and roasted peppers were legendary. He loved his trips to the Italian market to grab the essential breads, meats, seafood, cheeses, and all the ingredients needed for making homemade sausages, wine, and other delicious treats. Cooking was a passion of his and many of us were lucky enough to have savored the fabulous food he made.
He was a member of the Generale Ameglio Society where he enjoyed countless hours having fun with friends and offered his culinary magic for numerous events. Always there with a smile, a wise-crack or a joke, Sal made sure that everyone around him was having fun along with him.
Sal is survived by his daughter Alicia D’Orsi (Larry); son Salvatore D’Alfonso, Jr. and his fiancée Kate Collazo; grandchildren Carly, Connor and Jack D’Alfonso, and Matthew and Alexandra D’Orsi; his brothers Joseph D’Alfonso (Priscilla) and Angelo D’Alfonso (Linda); his in-laws Ida Morrell, Leonard Ouellette (Lynne), Deborah Wright (Daniel), and Ronald Hopkins; many relatives in Priolo, Italy; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents (Santo and Carmela), his wife Stella, his brother Sebastian, and his in-laws Julien and Jeannette Ouellette.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 AM at St. Ann Church, 101 North St., New Britain. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
