Richard R. Knopf

Richard Robert Knopf, 88, of Kensington, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020 at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. He was the widower of Irene Knopf.

Born in Windsor, he was the son of the late Otto and Lydia (Renn) Knopf. He was a Kensington resident most of his life and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Richard was the former owner of Hi-Way Package Store in Berlin and was formerly employed at American Paper Goods. Most recently, Richard served as the sexton at Kensington Congregational Church, before retiring. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Kensington.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Nick DiPierdomenico of Kensington; two sons, Ken Knopf and his girlfriend Judi Prevost of Kensington and Gary Knopf of New Britain; a sister, Barbara Bendzinski of Newington; a sister-in-law, Dolores Knopf; and four grandchildren, Nicole Kupstas and her husband Ryan, Dan Knopf, Kevin Knopf, and Katie Knopf; and his great grandson, Jack Kupstas who he adored. Special thanks to Rich’s niece Debb Wojciulewicz who was such a great help to him and made sure he always had an amazing meal on the table. In addition to his wife and parents, Richard was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Knopf.

Rich loved his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his buddies Jerry Kramer and Ron Gombatz who were always there for a chat or to lend a helping hand. Rich enjoyed the simple things in life; a visit in the yard, making puzzles, a nice dinner and growing the best tomatoes in the neighborhood. He was liked by everyone who met him and his smile will always be in our hearts.

A private graveside service will be held at Maple Cemetery in Berlin. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Foodshare or a charity of the donor’s choice. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, New Britain, is in charge of arrangements.
