Peter Spano Sr. was born on March 21, 1927. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was raised in New York City during the Great Depression. He helped support his family at age 5 by being a shoe shine boy charging 5 cents a shine in the city. He would sometimes negotiate to 3 cents if need be. He later moved to New Britain and attended New Britain High School. He then enlisted in the Navy for World War II. Upon returning from the war he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Bruce, and opened "Spano Printing Co." which was in business for 60 years. He attended Tunxis Community College upon retirement at age 80. He was the oldest person to graduate from the school. He was on the New Britain Town Committee, the Redevelopment Committee, the Democratic Town Committee and his favorite, the Police Athletic League for children. He also belonged to the Rotary Club and Elks Club. He loved to sail his boat in races in the Niantic Bay.
He leaves behind his son Peter Spano Jr. and daughter, Lynn Spano Rist, 3 grandsons, Matthew Spano, David Rist and Michael Rist. He was surrounded by loving family when he passed on September 29th on the Harvest, Super Full Moon.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 1:00 PM at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family requests no flowers. However, donations in Peter’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
