Olga Margaret Plocharczyk

Olga Margaret (Litke) Plocharczyk, known as Margaret among her family and friends, passed away, at the age of 99, on May 5, 2024 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut.

Margaret, the daughter of the late Frederick and Augusta (Zaft) Litke, was born in New Britain where she lived until 2001 when she moved to Kensington. For the past five years, Margaret was a resident of Arbor Rose in New Britain.

Margaret was a graduate of the New Britain High School Class of 1942. In 1988, she retired from the State of CT Department of Motor Vehicles as a supervisor, having worked at the DMV for 19 years. Prior to her State of CT service, she worked at Landers Frary and Clark in New Britain.

Margaret was a devout and resolute lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Britain, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. At St. John’s, she was a member of the Altar Guild, the Women of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), Lutheran Adult Fellowship, and the St. John’s Quilters Group. Margaret was also a member of AARP’s New Britain Chapter #2027, the New Britain Senior Center, and the Literacy Volunteers of America.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bernard (Benny), her three brothers, William, Edward, and Arthur Litke, and her two sisters Mildred Stedman and Eleanor Cichowski. Margaret is survived by her sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Hebert, a very dear niece, Patricia A. Ryiz, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

Although not blessed with children of her own, Margaret was a substitute mother to many of her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who lived on the 1st Floor of her home in New Britain. Aunt Marge’s door was always open, and she welcomed all of her “children” into her home filled with the wonderful smell of cookies baking and a pot of soup bubbling on the stove. Her kind and loving manner backed by her reassuring strength of character made being in her presence a safe and loving haven.

Margaret was a talented and versatile artist who practiced many forms of art – watercolor and oil painting, ceramics, needle work, crocheting, making greeting cards, and photography. She was open to any form of art in which she could express herself. Of note, Margaret created 22 porcelain dolls, one whose dress was sewn from the fabric of her own wedding gown.

Margaret’s family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at The Jerome Home and Arbor Rose where Margaret lived for the last five years of her life. In particular, we thank Cecilia Asante who was Margaret’s live-in caregiver for all those years. Were it not for Cecilia’s loving and constant care, Margaret could not have lived to the age of 99, happy and in such good health.
