Nona Belomyzy, 97, passed away on Tuesday May 3. Born and raised in New Britain, she was the daughter of Michael and Anna (Panasewich) Belomyzy. She was a graduate of New Britain High School and of the New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing. She first worked at the hospital as the Head Nurse on the women’s surgical floor and then was employed at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for twenty-five years as the Supervising Nurse for all medical facilities for United Technologies in Connecticut, retiring in 1981.
Nona proudly served her country as a nurse in the US Navy during World War II attaining the rank of Lieutenant. She made her home with her loving sister Zenaida Sotnick, having moved to Kensington in 1969, before moving to Arbor Rose in New Britain in 2008. She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in New Britain and a member of the church’s Sisterhood. Nona was an avid reader, loved to travel and spent much time knitting and rooting for the New York Yankees. Her greatest joy was to baby-sit for her nieces and nephews and then a generation later, for their children as well.
She was pre-deceased by her sisters, Mildred Sotnick, Zenaida Sotnick and Jennie Skovich and three brothers, Paul Belomyzy, Gustave Belomyzy and Walter Bell and a nephew Richard Skovich. She leaves several loving nieces and nephews; Paul and Annette Salina of Kensington, Michael and Marjane Belomyzy of Cheyenne, WY, Nona Richards of Middletown, Joe and Dorothy Kowar of New Britain, Edon and Eileen Smith of Cos Cob, Paul Belomy of California and Frances Bell of Michigan; 13 grand-nieces and nephews and 24 great-grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday May 6 at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church at 305 Washington Street in New Britain 06051. Friends and family may call at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospital of Central Connecticut-Auxiliary at New Britain General Scholarship Fund at 100 Grand Street, New Britain, CT 06051. The Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of New Britain is in charge of arrangements.Holy Trinity Orthodox Church
