Nils L. Hakanson

Nils L. Hakanson was called home on Saturday September 14 at the age of 95. Born in Karlskrona, Sweden his family immigrated to the United States in 1929, settling in Springfield, MA. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (Smith) Hakanson in 1991. He is survived by his son Don Hakanson and his wife, Susan, of Dolores, CO and his daughter Janet Hakanson-Stacy and her husband, Michael, of East Longmeadow, MA. He also leaves four granddaughters, Brigit Hakanson of CO, Anna (Hakanson) Muniz and her husband, Martin, of NM, Amanda Hakanson-Stacy and her husband, Nathan Taylor of NC and Katie Hakanson-Stacy of East Longmeadow, MA. Nils played soccer for Technical High School in Springfield and graduated in 1936. He served in the Navy from 1944-1946. Nils graduated from Western New England College and became an accomplished engineer. A man of deep personal faith in Jesus Christ, he was committed to both family and church. A longstanding member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, he made it his mission to welcome new people through genuine love and hospitality. Over his lifetime he was involved in many church ministries. His song of praise remained, "To God be the glory, great things He has done!" Our family would like to thank the staff at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke, MA for their loving care of Nils and our family over the past 5 years. A celebration of his life will be held at 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 22 at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Springfield. Burial will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery on Friday, September 20, at 1:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Covenant Church, 915 Plumtree Rd., Springfield, MA 01119.
