Nancy J. (Beers) Wicander Johnson, 83, of Cromwell, and formerly of Berlin, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Pilgrim Manor in Cromwell. She was the widow of William Wicander and C. Howard Johnson. Born in Watertown, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Eula Jane (Cooke) Beers. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1948 and the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. Nancy was formerly employed as a licensed Registered Nurse at the Premature Nursery at Hartford Hospital (Infant ICU) and later in the Pediatric Department at Grove Hill Clinic. Nancy became a stay at home mother for thirty years while raising her family. She then returned to nursing, working for the Berlin Public Health Department at Griswold School for 10 years before retiring. Nancy lived in Berlin for 46 years before moving to Covenant Village of Cromwell in 2005. Nancy was a longtime member of Elim Baptist Church, Kensington Baptist Church which is now Wellspring. She was also a member of the Berlin Historical Society, the Berlin Garden Club, Berlin AARP, The Breakfast Bunch, and was a lifetime member of the Society for Mayflower Decendants. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, and crafts including latchhook, crewel, needlepoint, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid sewer and seamstress, having made clothing for her children and grandchildren, as well as curtains, drapes and chair covers. Surviving are her children, Jeanne M. and Vincent A. Soares, Mark J. and Janet (Brochu) Wicander, Thomas H. and Leslie (Palmer) Wicander; her grandchildren, Stephen Soares, William Soares, Erik Wicander, Brian Wicander, Kristen Wicander, Megan Wicander, Katherine Wicander, and James Wicander; her stepchildren, Mark Johnson and Linda (Mick) Johnson, Penny Griffen, Jennifer and Richard Johnson; step-grandchildren, Matthew and Monica Johnson and their children Eleanor Mae, Mark Jacob, Coral Love, Erik and Kate Johnson and their children, Esther, Gideon, Sarah, and Jack, her sisters, Doris and Roy Newell and Eleanor Van Deusen; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. She was predeceased by a son, David W. Wicander and his wife Rebecca and a sister, Evelyn Phelps. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at Wellspring. Burial will be in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. Calling hours are Friday evening from 5-7 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St. New Britain.
