Mrs. Marie Whitlatch (nee Bollwein), most recently of Cromwell, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of May 18, 2023.
Born on June 10, 1928, in Queens, New York, and raised in Brooklyn with her beloved brother, George, whom she looked up to as a father, she attended the Saint Brigid School and obtained a Secretarial diploma from the Heffley Queensboro School before taking employment with the Eberhard Faber pencil company. About that time, she met George “Buddy” Whitlatch, whom she married on April 12, 1947, after he returned from the Asiatic-Pacific Theater a decorated WWII veteran of the United States army. They settled in a lovely new home in New Hyde Park, NY, and joined a local congregation of Lutherans, a tradition which she continued to uphold throughout her life. After George, the love of her life, was taken from her too soon on the afternoon of his fifty-eighth birthday, she moved to Hicksville, NY. Friends and acquaintances alike will remember that Marie loved her dogs—all animals, really. She considered her pets to be members of the family, each one special in its own way, and was a generous benefactor in support of the protection of animals.
She is survived by her niece, Eileen Goldfield, whom she looked after as a daughter, and grand-nephew John Monsen, of Oakhurst, NJ. She will be remembered as someone who never judged anyone by their circumstances or beliefs, caring only that they were kind and friendly. She will be fondly remembered by her lifelong friend Virginia Mann, of Val Rico, FL; Joseph and Mary Curatolo, of New Hyde Park, NY, and Philip Grover, of Middletown, CT.
An interment service will be held at 12:30 on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to the Benevolent Care Fund for residents of Covenant Living of Cromwell, 101 West St, Cromwell, CT 06416.
