Maria A. Alvarez

It is with great sadness in announcing the passing of Maria A. Alvarez on Saturday December 26, 2015. Maria was born on August 18, 1952, in Cidra, Puerto Rico. Maria was the beloved and cherished daughter of Salvadora Bermudez and the late Pedro Alvarez of Cidra Puerto Rico. New Britain became her home in 1979 and it is where she made a lifelong career working for Central Connecticut State University for more than 32 years holding various positions where she was known and loved by students, faculty and staff. CCSU was her home away from home. Maria’s legacy to her family is her lasting love, her belief in the value of hard work, and her uncompromising commitment as a wonderful mother, dedicated daughter and doting grandmother. Those who knew her will always remember her generosity of spirit, her warmth, and her kindness. As a member of St. Mary’s Church, New Britain, she was very active in many committees. Always caring and devoting her time, love and compassion to the mission.

She is survived and will be missed dearly by her children, Lucia M. Rolon of Springfield, MA, Wanda I. Torres of New Britain, and Melina Lopez and husband Roberto Lopez Jr; her grandchildren Jose M. Torres, Suliana Rolon, Pedro J. Carrasquillo, Mikeila M. Flores, Jose A. Carrasquillo, Sylvana M. Gonzalez, Isabella Lopez, Samuel Lopez and Heriberto “Peanut” Luna and great-grandchildren Allias “Tuntun” Torres and Luz Maria. Maria leaves two Brothers Jose Manuel Alvarez, Benjamin Rodriguez, and beloved sister Marian I. Vazquez and husband Hector Serrano. Maria was predeceased by her brother Pedro Alvarez. She also leaves several nephews and nieces. The special bond with her sister-in-law’s will never be broken Elba Alicea and Martina Rivera. Maria will be sorely missed by all who were blessed enough to know and love her.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 South Main St., New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Britain. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.
