Juan A. Varela, 99, of Cromwell, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Monday. He was the beloved husband of the late Flora Gonzalez de Varela.
Born in Corcobada de Hatilla, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Carlos Varela and Dominga Galarza. Juan was a long time New Britain resident before moving to Cromwell in 2004. He worked at Tuttle & Bailey, New Britain for many years until his retirement. Juan was a member and one of the founders of the Christian Pentecostal Church in New Britain. He was a true gentleman who treated others with kindness and respect. Juan was devoted to God and to his family, who were also devoted to him. He approached life with a sense of humor, yet had the ability to persevere through life’s difficulties and challenges. His knowledge, wisdom and guidance will be missed by those who knew him well. Instilled with a solid work ethic, he provided for his family and lead them into a better and brighter future. The Varela family will be forever grateful to members of the Christian Pentecostal Church and VITAS, Innovative Hospice Care.
Surviving are his son Jesus Varela and his wife Delia of Apopka, FL, three daughters, Isabel Marie Varela-Perry and her husband Manuel of Norfolk, VA, Edelmira Varela-Arroyo of New Britain, Sara Varela-Medina and her husband Waldemar of Cromwell; nine grandchildren; Esau Varela, Ruth Varela-Caldwell, Judith Varela-Maddock, Liz Marie Crespo, Sayla Varela Figueroa, Ernesto Crespo, Javier Arroyo, David Arroyo and Melinda Melendez, thirteen great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren.
