Josephine Hines, 94, of New Britain, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 15, 2004. She was the widow of James Johnson and Thomas Hines. Born in Calvery County, MD, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Idya Gray. At age 18, she moved to Baltimore, MD, where she met her first husband, James Johnson. She then moved to Rhode Island before coming to New Britain in 1925, and was united in marriage to Thomas Newman Hines in 1952. She was formerly employed at Howard Cleaners in New Britain. Josephine was a devoted member, worker and willing volunteer at McCullough Temple. She was a mother in the church, and served on the Usher Board and Missionary Board at church. She was a member of White Rose Court and Eastern Star. Surviving are two daughters, Beatrice Walker of New Britain and Margaret Johnson of Hartford; seven grandchildren, Carnell Small, Cheryl Small Parris, Dr. Rev. Dennis Johnson, Glen Walker, Linda McKenzie, Wayne Small, and Gary Johnson; eleven great-grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Josephine was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Johnson, a stepson, Charles Johnson, three sisters, Jennie Gray, Julia Gray Moore, and Alverta Gray Stanley; three brothers, George Gray, Frank Gray, and Gant Gray; and by a granddaughter, Joanne Tucker. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12 Noon at the McCullough Temple. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday morning from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon at the church.
