Joseph Ustanowski

Joseph Ustanowski, 89, of New Britain, beloved husband of Elizabeth Ustanowski, died peacefully on Sunday, March 8 2009, at Brittany Farms Healthcare Center. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Anthony and Catherine Yablonski Ustanowski. He was a New Britain resident most of his life and also lived in Pennsylvania for several years. Joseph was a US Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the 169th Infantry Division. He was formerly employed at the U.S. Postal Service in the New Britain office for 37 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the VFW, and the Ukrainian National Veterans Association. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Kerelejza Ustanowski; his daughter, Kathleen Ustanowski of Newington and her fiance, Robert Kowalchyk; a son, Tim Ustanowski and his wife Sandra of Berlin; a very special granddaughter, Emily Rose Ustanowski who was his pride and joy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Lois Ustanowski of Berlin, Anthony and Betty Ustanowski of Rocky Hill; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Sophie and Anna, and by a brother, John. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Burial, with military honors, will take place in St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-8 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 S. Main St. with a Panakhuda Service to be conducted at 5:30 PM. Visitation will also take place Thursday morning from 9-10 AM at the church. The family would like to thank their many friends and care givers at Brittany Farms Healthcare Center, Station 4 for their loving care extended to Joseph and his family.
