Joseph Edward Pavano Jr., age 79, beloved husband and best friend of Cynthia (Johnson) Pavano,died peacefully at his home on April 14, 2011. Born in New Britain, CT, the son of the late Mary and Joseph Pavano Sr., he lived in Kensington, CT for the past 40 years. He was a teacher, counselor, guidance department chairman and vice principal in the New Britain and West Hartford school systems for 38 years, and a real estate associate with the Joseph Scheyd Agency in Berlin after his retirement from teaching. Joe was a graduate of New Britain High School, and Ryder University with graduate degrees from the University of Hartford. He served his country during the Korean War as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Board of Education of the City of New Britain from 1964-1970 and served as its President in 1970. He was a member of the Board of Education at St. Paul's School in Kensington and on the Board of Directors of the Sheldon Clinic. He was a charter member of the Berlin VFW Post 10732, a member of the AARP,the Hartford County Retired Teachers Association, Association of Retired Teachers of CT and the West Hartford Retired Teachers Association. A member of UNICO, he served on and chaired the golf and scholarship committees, was a past President and was named Man of the Year in 1989. He was a member of the Timberlin Golf Club Seniors, he loved playing Bocci and cards with his buddies at the Italian Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and their spouses Dr. Joseph E. Pavano III and his wife Ann Hayden Pavano of Avon, and Attorneys Thomas and his wife Stacey King Pavano of Madison, CT. The joy of his life were his four grandchildren Ryan, Colin, Jack and Samantha. He leaves two sisters Eileen Calderone and her husband Charles of Kensington, and Marie Niedzwicki of New Britain as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. He also leaves his life long card friends at the "Knights of the Round Table." Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 South Main Street, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's Church in Kensington. Burial, with military honors, will be at the convenience of the family in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-8 PM. In Joe's honor, his family has set up a scholarship fund. This scholarship is to be given to a deserving Berlin High School student who expresses a desire to pursue a career in education.
