On Wednesday, September 2, 2015, Helen L. Whiteis, formerly of New Britain, passed away of natural causes in East Berlin, Connecticut. She was 99 years old. Helen was born in Crosby, Minnesota, on February 4, 1916, to Eva Josephine (Wiaderko) and Leonard Luby (nee Lubowitz). She was one of four children. She graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School and enrolled in a program to become a teacher at the Iron Hub High School in Brainerd, MN, and at Pine Grove School in Aitkin County, MN. She matriculated for undergraduate study at St. Cloud State College. She later graduated with honors, cum laude, from Central Connecticut State University (then Central Connecticut State College). She was a teacher for fourteen years at a succession of schools in Minnesota; in Winchester, Massachusetts; and in the Laboratory Schools, Central Connecticut State College. She was also teacher of special education in Bristol, Connecticut. Helen was the loving wife of the late Ulysses E. Whiteis, who passed away on November 28, 1997, and the loving and attentive mother of a son, David Gregory Whiteis, now of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward L. Luby of Crosby, Minnesota, and her sisters Mary M. Morin Brummel of Lake Forest, CA. and Evelyn E. Sheets, of Deerwood, Minnesota. Services will be private.
