Helen Shaskus

Helen (Bury) Shaskus, 88, of Kensington, beloved wife of Joseph Shaskus, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Taftville, CT and raised in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late John and Katarzyna (Dziewit) Bury. Helen was a Cromwell resident for 33 years before moving to Kensington in 1988. Helen was employed at the Connecticut Mutual Insurance Co. before starting her family. Upon moving to Cromwell, Helen and her husband, Joseph, owned and operated Shas-Bury Farm for many years. She always looked forward to springtime with the earth reawakening and a new growing season, when she would welcome back customers with her warm smile and kind, thoughtful ways. Helen was a member of St. John's Church in Cromwell and St. Paul's Church in Kensington. She was also a member of The Holly Club, a women's group from The Connecticut Mutual whose participants celebrated every Christmas season and enjoyed summer picnics together for more than 70 years. Recently, she enjoyed attending activities at the Berlin Senior Center and seeing "the ladies" in her stretch class. Helen felt blessed to have been able to travel abroad with her husband, Joseph, but found the greatest pleasure in their daily walks in nature. In addition to her husband Joseph, she is survived by three children, John Shaskus of Nampa, Idaho, Katharine Shaskus (Randall) of Kensington, and Joe Shaskus (Edward) of East Haddam; two brothers, Peter Bury of Lisle, Illinois and Frank Bury of San Diego, California; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Shaskus and Woodrow Shattuck. She was predeceased by her sister, Julia Campagna. Private funeral services will be held at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army National Headquarters, P.O. Box 269, Alexandria, VA 22314, or to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067. "Grieve not, nor think of me with tears, but laugh and talk to me as if I were beside you. I loved you so- twas heaven here with you." - Isla Paschal Richardson.
