Gertrude Louise Cottrell Hall passed away on January 19, 2008 at the age of 94. Born in New Britain, CT on December 26, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Alice Munson Cottrell and William George Cottrell. She attended New Britain schools and graduated from Moody’s Business School. For several years she was employed in the office of the former Ferndale Dairy, Inc. of Kensington before marrying Alfred W. Hall in 1940. She and her husband ran Ferndale’s Simsbury operation during the war years, and in 1945 returned to the Kensington operation where they lived and worked for the remainder of their married life until Alfred’s death in 1986. She was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church for over sixty years. Gertrude was predeceased by her brother, United States Army Sgt. George E. Cottrell, declared Missing in Action after the invasion of Guam on August 7, 1944. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, William George Hall and Cathleen B. Hall of Newington and Allan Winston Hall and Judith O. Hall of Kensington, her sister-in-law, Viola Cottrell Sadin of Kensington, her four granddaughters, Jennifer, Allison, Caralyn and Alexandra, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, among them a special and devoted niece, Barbara Hall Orcutt of Kensington. Gertrude led a quiet, unpretentious life, expecting little and grateful for whatever friendship, kind attention, good fortune, good care and family love came her way. Her serene acceptance was her key to so long a life. The family is ever appreciative of the efforts of the staff at Covenant Village of Cromwell who made the final twelve years of her life so pleasant and comfortable. There will be no calling hours. A committal service will be held at West Lane Cemetery on High Road in Kensington on Saturday, January 26 at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service in the chapel of Covenant Village of Cromwell, 52 Missionary Road at 11:30 AM. The family has requested that floral tributes be omitted. The Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of New Britain is serving the family.
