George Howard Jones, of Wethersfield, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Britain on June 3, 1924 he was the son of the late George Jones and Caroline (Sokolik) Jones.
After graduating from New Britain High in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He made eight Atlantic crossings as a signalman first class and navigator, carrying supplies to the British Isles and France. After the war in Europe ended, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Siboney in the Pacific until the defeat of Japan.
After being discharged from the Navy in 1946 he graduated from the Porter School of Design, spending 35 years as a tool designer, the last 29 years at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. He retired at age 59 in 1983 and enjoyed 30 plus years with his family, playing golf, traveling, and joining other retired Armed Guard members at monthly meetings. George was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newington.
George is survived by his companion of 36 years Dorothy Kobus; his three sons, Peter and his wife Lydia of Farmington, Mark and his wife Darlene of Southington, Tom and his wife Judy of Canton; his grandchildren, Justin, Victoria, Natalie, Michael, Marina, Matthew, Bryan, Samantha, and Tiffany; and his great grandchildren, Bennett, Parker, and Aloria. Also surviving are many members of the Jones and Massi families to mourn his loss.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary (Massi) Jones, mother of his four sons, in 1976 and his treasured son Jeffrey who died in 1996 as well as his sisters, Caroline Carlson, Jane Westergren, Shirley Samuelson, and Emma Jones.
Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 9:00 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., New Britain followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Burial, with military honors, will be in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 27, from 5-7 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home.
