George A. Closson of Newington, CT has died at age 82, October 26, 2006. George was born October 3, 1924 and raised in the Saratoga Springs, New York area son of Earl and Ethel Closson. At a young age George moved to Connecticut where he met Barbara Dyson. They married in August 1944 and raised two children. He ran a number of his own businesses before founding the Closson & Closson Real Estate Co. George was very active in the Berlin, Connecticut area being the catalyst in developing Webster Square. He was actively involved in the Real Estate business for forty years developing and owning industrial, commercial and residential rental properties in Berlin and surrounding areas. For many years he maintained Real Estate offices in Berlin, Newington, Torrington, and in West Hartford. Through his unfailing efforts he prevailed on the State of Connecticut to bridge what was to become Webster Square Road when the new Route 72 was constructed in the late 1950's. Without his efforts, Webster Square Road would not exist today. In the late 1950's he built one of the first modern office buildings in Berlin then known as the Closson Professional Building. After his retirement he enjoyed spending his time in Florida and at his Highland Lake home, "Pine Glo Island" in Winchester, finally settling in Newington. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 62 years, his two sons, George N. Closson Winsted, Ct., and wife Susan, Craig A. Closson Winsted, Ct., and wife Janet, grandchildren, Stacy, Matthew and Andrea and two great grandsons, Chad and Nicholas. George also leaves several brothers and a sister in New York state.
