George J. Chikar

George J. Chikar, 94, of New Britain died unexpectedly on Monday, April 27 as a result of an automobile accident. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Imre and Katalin Chikar. He was a lifelong New Britain resident. George was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre and the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and 5 campaign ribbons. He was formerly employed at SNET for 39 years, before retiring in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. George was an avid lifelong sports enthusiast and was well known at the New Britain ballparks. More recently, he was passionate about bowling, playing in local leagues and supporting other players who will miss his smile, constant presence, and encouragement. Mostly, he will be missed by his closest family and friends, his niece, Dr. Carol Baxer of Long Beach, CA; his sister, Tille Barlow of Little Rock, AR; the Charles Karanian Family, especially Charlene; and Brenda Stawski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 3 PM. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10 AM at the Veterans section of Fairview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Rd., Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
