Frederick E. Norton

Frederick E. Norton, 73, of New Britain, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at home. Fred was born in Providence, RI on June 14, 1931 and was the son of the late Damon and Roberta Crocker Norton. He attended local schools and graduated from New Britain Senior High School, Class of "49". Before graduating, he worked at the local YMCA in the physical education department, obtained his life-guard qualification and became a lifeguard at the YMCA. He worked with the local Boy Scouts chapter and was assistant waterfront director at the scout camp. He entered the Navy in 1950 and retired in 1981. While on active duty, he served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. Fred always met each day with a positive attitude along with a little humor. Many times he stated that when I'm ready to go and should happen to win the lotto, if I can't take it with me, I'm not going. A little humor in life, even during the sad times, helps the mind and body go on. He loved and cared for animals and always had time for the neighborhood kids. Thanks to everyone, relatives, neighbors and friends of being a part of his life. He leaves his two cousins, Linda Willett of Middletown and Richard Seaburg of Madison and a host of wonderful friends and neighbors who the family wishes to thank for all their support and kindnesses that they so graciously extended to Fred over the years. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Fairview Cemetery, section 25 New Britain. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Conn. Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
