Florence Mary Nesta

Florence M. Verderosa Nesta, 102, departed this life that she so dearly loved on January 15, 2004 at Rockville General Hospital where her loving family gathered by her side thus bringing an end to an era of her life. Florence was born, raised and schooled in Lioni, Avellino, Italy on May 19, 1901. Her life span of over one century allowed her to witness and become a part of historical events, from the horse and buggy to the age of electricity, autos, television, computers and space exploration. Florence immigrated to the U.S. in 1919. She married Joseph Nesta in St. Mary's Church, New Britain on August 5, 1920. Florence attended school in New Britain and soon after Mr. and Mrs. Nesta were proud to become U.S. citizens. She encouraged her children to seek higher education. Florence has been loved, admired, and respected for her 102 years of unconditional love and a will to live. She has become an inspiration to all whose lives touched her. Florence became the family baker and was often called upon to make her ''Italian cookies'' for the showers and weddings of nieces, nephews and friends. She also was the counselor and advocate for her Italian community since she could read and write in both Italian and English. She helped many by writing and translating letters for them. During World War II Florence collected and sent care packages to family and friends in Italy. Following the death of her adoring husband in 1972, Florence moved from New Britain to Tolland to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and John Piazza. She became very active with the Tolland Seniors. When this group visited Washington D.C., she had the privilege of meeting and attended a luncheon with President and Mrs. Jimmie Carter. She said it was a highlight of her life. Florence was known as ''Grandma Nesta'' by her Tolland neighbors and their children. She loved cooking and baking for them. Florence was a resident at Woodlake at Tolland for the past 10 years. Florence's family extends their sincere gratitude for their care, tenderness, love and compassion to all of its staff. In addition, the family wishes to thank Father James Carrini and clergy of St. Matthew's Church in Tolland for their continuous kindness and spiritual care. Florence leaves her devoted family to mourn her and to celebrate her remarkable life. They include her children, Mildred M. Edmiston, Anthony J. Nesta, Sr., Florence Boucher, all of New Britain, and Terry A. Piazza of Ellington. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren including 2 sets of twins and 1 great great grandson. Florence was predeceased by her 6 brothers and sisters, 2 sons-in-law, John Piazza of Tolland and Leo Boucher of New Britain and a grandson, Jerome Boucher also of New Britain. Her grandchildren recall being serenaded by Grandma to the tune of ''Good Night Irene''. Good night Florence, we all love you and will miss you forever. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 11:00 AM St. Joseph's Church, 195 So. Main St., New Britain. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain.
