Elpidio "Lilo" Cruz, 82, of New Britain, beloved husband of Elvira Cruz, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lajas, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Pedro Cruz and Justina Alicea. As a young man he left Puerto Rico 56 years ago to marry and raise a family, seeking a new life in Connecticut. He made New Britain his home for more than 50 years. He was formerly employed at Stanley Works. He loved his job as a tow motor operator for 38 years. After retiring, he continued to be very active reflecting his strong work values. His family parish is St. Mary Church. "Lilo" was an extraordinary grandfather. Known as "Papu" by his grandchildren, he was deeply involved in their schooling and extracurricular pursuits. He was known by his family, friends and neighbors as "Mr.Fix-it" always willing to lend a hand in repairing or caring for home, cars and garden. His passion for baseball was infectious, even if others didn't enjoy it, all participated in watching anyway. In later life, word puzzles were one of his favorite pastimes. He was a shy and gentle man with a sweet sense of humor that came through his signature smiling eyes and lips. Surviving are his beloved wife, Elvira Casiano Cruz; two daughters, Marilynn Cruz-Aponte of Farmington and Frances J. Terry and her husband Steve of Georgia; four grandchildren, Leigha Terry, Amanda Lee Aponte, Alex Aponte III, and Erik M. Terry; many brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4-8 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., New Britain, with a memorial service conducted on Monday, May 24, 2010, from 7:00 to 7:30 PM. Funeral services and burial will take place in Lajas, Puerto Rico.
