Elizabeth Karlames

Elizabeth Karlames, 101, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Saturday 12/30/2023, with her family by her side at the Hospital of Central Connecticut. Elizabeth was born on February 26, 1922, in New Britain and was a lifelong resident. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Nota (Politis) Karlames.

Elizabeth attended local schools and was a graduate of New Britain High School and Morse Secretarial School. She worked at New Britain General Hospital for several years and spent over 30 years at the Connecticut Dept. of Health where she was an important member of the team that established the first tumor registry in the United States. Elizabeth was very proud of her Greek heritage. She was an active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and served as president of the Ladies Philoptochos Society for many years. She was also a member of the culture committee for the annual Greek Festival.  Elizabeth loved shopping in New York City and attending Broadway shows. She was a kind, loving sister and aunt who always supported her family.

Elizabeth leaves four nephews, Peter (Eileen) Beresford of New Britain, Ronald Beresford of Southington, Rev. Deacon Moses (James) Beresford of Southington, and Philip Beresford of Meriden and great nieces Amy (Eric) Stewart of Kensington, Lisa (Kyle) Alger of Kensington, Anna Rose Beresford of New Britain, and great nephew Kevin (Mary) Beresford of New Britain.  She also leaves four great great nephews and a great great niece. She was predeceased by her sisters Lifteria Karlames, Mary Karlames, Bessie Beresford, Alice Karlames, Lettye Stathos, and a brother George Karlames.

Elizabeth’s funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. There will be a calling hour before the service at 10:00 AM.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 West Main St., New Britain, CT 06052.
