Eleanor Hintz Groth, 91, of New Britain, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012. She was the wife of the late Howard Raymond Groth for 63 years. Born in New Britain on June 7, 1920, daughter of the late Gustave and Emma (Maron) Hintz. Eleanor attended local schools, graduated from New Britain High School in 1939 and earned an R.N. degree from New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Later, she became a Radiologic Technologist and managed the Radiology Department at Newington Children's Hospital. Eleanor was a life-long, active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Her faith in God was the foundation of her life. She was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Club, served on the Altar Guild, was a choir mother, and participated on numerous committees through the years. She was a member of the New Britain Garden Club and also worked many years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross blood drives. Eleanor is survived by three daughters, Gretchen Withrow and her husband David of Abingdon, Maryland, Karen Canora and her husband John of New Britain, and Ellen Materne and her husband Russell of Carlisle, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren, Maron Bolton, Eleanor and Jonathon Withrow, Jill Canora, and Emma Caroline, Isabel, and Grace Materne; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; her sisters Dorothy Reed of Berlin, Marie Lois Dow of Greensboro, North Carolina, and her brother William Hintz of New Britain. She was predeceased by a granddaughter Kathryn Canora, her brother Waldemer Hintz and her sister Betty Wright. We will remember Eleanor as a loving wife and mother filled with compassion, eternal optimism, resilience and unfaltering faith. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to everyone at Arbor Rose and Jerome Home for the love and care they have given our mom. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday March 24, 2012 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 295 Arch St., New Britain, CT 06051. There are no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, 4600 Devitt Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246 or St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
