Eleanor R. Calderone, 92, of New Britain, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. She was the widow of James C. Calderone. Born in New Britain on June 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Gothard and Hulda (Swanson) Peterson. Ellie graduated from New Britain High School, Class of 1941. She was a long time New Britain resident and was formerly employed at Landers, Frary & Clark after school; Corbin Screw Corp. doing defense work during World War II; Stanley Works under Manpower, Inc. and Kelly Girl Services; Hardware City Co-Operative Insurance Co. as a secretary; and retired from Constructive Workshop in 1988. After retiring, Eleanor did volunteer work at First Lutheran Church and most recently at the Northend School, working with the first graders, which she enjoyed very much. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in New Britain, the New Britain Senior Center and the New Britain Area Seniors. Eleanor loved life, always keeping busy, "never a dull moment," even though she was ailing the last few years of her life. She was a great bingo player. Surviving are her daughter, Joan Gonzalez and her husband Paul and their precious little angel and granddaughter, Hannah, whom she loved very much, all of Framingham, MA; her son, James Calderone and his wife Diane of Plainville; a brother, Allan Peterson of Bristol; a sister, Shirley Rowland of Florida; many caring nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many friends. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, James C. Calderone; a daughter, Jean Radun, a brother, John Peterson and his wife, Harriet, a sister, Arlene Davis and her husband, Donald, a sister-in-law, Erna Peterson, and a brother-in-law, Bill Rowland. Eleanor wants to bid farewell to her friends at the School I and School II Apartments, her friends at the Retreat in Hartford, friends at Monsignor Bojnowski Manor, and her 2 best friends, Gertrude Bury, and the late Dorothy Lindberg, whom she knew since childhood. "Good Bye - See you in Heaven." Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 PM at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. A calling hour will be held on Thursday from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., New Britain.
