Edward J. Dixon, 88, a life-long New Britain resident, passed away on January 13th in New Britain.
Born in 1928, he was the son of the late Michael and Sophie (Boger) Dixon. He was preceded in death by his Brother Richard, who gave his life in defense of the nation in 1944, Brother Donald, and Sisters Francis, Helen, Molly, Arline and Elsie. Ed enlisted in the Army in 1946 and served Honorably in U.S. Army’s Constabulary Forces as part of the U.S. forces occupying Germany immediately after the Second World War. His decorations include the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.
Upon his discharge from the Army, he completed his High School education, graduating from New Britain High School. After graduation he was hired by Stanley Tools, beginning a 42 year long career, retiring as a machine set up specialist in 1990. He met the love of his life, Eleanor Strohecker, the long-time East Street Branch librarian, marrying her in 1953, embarking on a 63 year journey that lasted “until death did they part”.
Ed actively participated in sports as a young man, including the Stanley Softball league, playing on the 1960 championship team and serving many years as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Stanley Ten Pin and Duck Pin leagues. In retirement he was very active in the Stanley Seniors organization, leading multiple social activities and doing what he was best at, having fun and spreading good cheer.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Eleanor; four sons, Colonel (Retired) Edward T. Dixon, USAF and his wife Elise of Williamsburg, Virginia, Kenneth A. Dixon and his wife April Bowman of Bristol Connecticut, Michael W. Dixon and his wife Rachel of Berlin, Connecticut and David J. Dixon of New Britain. Ed’s life was enriched by five beloved grandchildren; Eddie, Nicole, William, Ashley and Troy. Also cherishing his memory are his in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends in the greater New Britain area.
