Dorothea C. Mccoll

Dorothea Crawford (Canning) McColl, 80, of Kensington, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday. She was the widow of John “Scotty” McColl.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late James and Susan (McGinley) Canning. Dorothea immigrated to the United States in February 1959. She has been a resident of Kensington for 50 years and is a former New Britain resident for seven years.

Dorothy was a proud and strong woman whose unselfish outlook and infectious smile touched everyone she came in contact with.

She was especially proud of the opportunity to work with her beloved brother as a decorative painter restoring very meticulous and intricate architectural designs which included the CT State Capital and other historic landmark buildings.

She was a member of the Daughters of Scotia and St. Paul Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law John and Lisa McColl of Berlin, her two daughters Jacqueline Susan McColl and Suzanne Crawford McColl, both of Farmington, her grandson Ian Thomas McColl of West Hartford, her brother and sister-in-law John and Sadie Canning of Cheshire, a dear and close childhood friend Julia (Dunn) Sandowski of Chicago and several nieces and nephews (Auntie Dorry). Dorothea was predeceased by her daughter Catherine Bain McColl and her brothers James, Fergus and William Canning.

The family would like to extend their thanks to all the caregivers, especially Dion and the staff at Vitas. A special thanks to Lulu Allen, an angel sent from heaven whose compassion and loving care were a blessing.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:00 am at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Paul Church, Kensington. Burial will be in Maple Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.hlovingcare.org .
