Donald J. MacKenzie, 82, of New Britain, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. Born in Gloucester, MA, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Carter) MacKenzie. Donald was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a former Plainville resident and a New Britain resident for over 40 years. Donald was formerly employed at Central Connecticut State University, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Franco War Veterans, American Legion, St. Jean Baptiste Societe, and the French Model Club. Donald was an avid fisherman. Surviving are his children, Donald MacKenzie Jr. and his wife Sue of East Haddam, Brian MacKenzie of Kensington, and Brenda Matulis and her husband Matthew of Salem; a brother, Frank MacKenzie of Gloucester, MA; and three grandchildren, Amanda Matulis, Andrew Matulis and Jake MacKenzie. He was predeceased by two sons, Steven MacKenzie and David MacKenzie. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 1:15 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., New Britain followed by a funeral service to be conducted at 1:15 PM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.
