Deane B. Olson, 90, of Cromwell, husband of Judith Olson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Clarence and Bertha (Swanson) Olson. Deane was a former New Britian and Southington resident before moving to Cromwell in 2016. He was a member of South Church in New Britain where he loved singing in the choir. After graduating from the University of Connecticut Engineering program, Deane proudly served as an officer in the US Navy. He would often share stories and talk about his time on the USS Meredith. Following his military service, he started a career at SNET in New Haven as an electrical engineer, where he continued to work for 40 years. Upon retirement, Deane went back to school and earned a Master’s of Religious Studies from the Hartford Seminary. Deane enjoyed many activities including figure skating, skiing, bicycling, swimming, tennis, golf, and paddling a canoe. He was a member of the Chancel Choir, Telephone Pioneers, the Veterans Skating Rink and the Waterbury Figure Skating Club. Deane was also a former ski instructor at Okemo Mountain.
Surviving are his wife, Judith (Bremer) Olson; three daughters, Sara O. Peterson and her husband Craig, Milary Olson and her husband Steven Cohen, and Kirsten Browning and her husband Dan; a sister Nancy Schirmer and her husband Rex; five grandchildren, Oliva Peterson, Graham Peterson, Quinn Cohen, Maevon Cohen, and Saki Cohen; three stepsons, Jonathan, Geoffrey and Andrew O’Brian; and six step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 10:30 AM at South Church, 90 Main St., New Britain. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will be held privately in Fairview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to South Church in New Britain or Covenant Living of Cromwell. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
