Charles Vartanian, 87, of Kensington, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at the Jerome Home after a short illness. He was the widower of Elizabeth Azarigian Vartanian. Born in Pawtucket, RI, to Hagop Vartanian and Dickranouhi Surabian Vartanian, he grew up in New York City and was a former resident of Hartford and New Britain before moving to Kensington in 1969. Charles was formerly employed at Royal Typewriter and Hartford Provision before retiring. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II where he served as a Radio Man on both the USS Fiske and USS Caswell. He was a member of the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection in New Britain and Sequin Lodge in Newington. Charles was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and painting. Surviving are two sons, Charles S. Vartanian of New Britain and Mark A. Vartanian of Middletown; a daughter, Sharon E. Vartanian of New Boston, NH; a brother, Ashod Vartanian of Missouri; two nephews, Robert Vartanian of Missouri and Richard Vartanian of Wisconsin.; his sister-in-law, Mary Omartian of Springfield, MA; two nieces, Lisa Omartian of Springfield, MA and Lauren Omartian of Watertown, MA; other relatives and his many friends at Timberlin Golf Club including his golf buddies John K. and John D.; and his many friends at the Berlin Senior Center. In addition to his wife Elizabeth, he was predeceased by his wife's parents, Sarkis and Seranoosh Azarigian, and his brother-in-law, Hurach Azarigian. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St., New Britain and at 10:00 AM at the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection. Burial, with military honors, will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-8 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home.
