Rev. Charles R. Swart, Jr.

Rev. Charles R. Swart Jr., 81, of Cromwell, CT, a former resident of Veazie, ME, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004. He was the beloved husband of Bertha McChesney Swart. Born in Schenectady, NY, he was the son of the late Charles R. Swart Sr. and Isabel Sprague Swart. He lived in the Bangor area for 15 years and was a resident of Cromwell CT since 2001. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II, having served the European Theater of Operations. He received his Masters of Divinity Degree from the Bangor Theological Seminary in 1992. He served various YMCA's for many years before attending seminary. He formerly served as the Chaplain of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bangor and was an associate member of Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin, CT. He was a member of the Fellowship of Merry Christians and a member of the American Legion Post 105 in Cromwell, CT where he served as Chaplin for two years. In addition to his wife Bertha, he is survived by a son, Charles R. Swart III and his wife Susan of Branford; a daughter, Candace Braithwaite and her husband William of Rochester, NH; a sister, Lillian Maxfield of Troy, NY; his stepmother, Margaret Moses of FL; three grandchildren, Andrew Swart, Dawn Alt and Brianne Cloutier; two great-grandchildren, Madison Alt and Jacob Alt. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Margery Ellen, and by a brother, Norman. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 at 1:00 pm at Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill St. Berlin, CT. Burial, with military honors, will be held privately in the State Veterans Cemetery, in Middletown, CT. There are no calling hours. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home in New Britain, CT is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 56 Center St., Bangor, ME 04401.
