Carmela DiMaio, 79, of Kensington, CT, died Friday, September 30 th , after a brief illness with her family by her side. She was born in Sperone (Avellino), Italy on January 30, 1943 and moved to New Britain in 1972. She was a resident of Kensington since 1989.
She was predeceased by her husband, Pasquale DiMaio, of 24 years, her son, John S. DiMaio, and sisters Maria (Monteforte) DAnna and Lucia Tarasco.
She will be greatly missed by her sons, Francesco DiMaio and wife Mailene, Elia DiMaio and wife Jennifer, and her beloved grandchildren, Gabriella, Francesca, Isabella, Luca, Hayden, Delia, Giovanni and Matteo. She also leaves behind her sisters, Rosa Mai and husband Luigi Mai, and Elena Monteforte and husband Antonio La Cava, of Italy, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Carmela was employed at the Jerome Home, New Britain, where she worked for 25 years. She took great pride in her role as head housekeeper. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Ann Church, New Britain, where she was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and enjoyed attending religious gatherings.
Carmela loved gardening and cooking for her family. She loved to share stories of her childhood in Italy and instilled a love of Italian traditions in all her grandchildren. She was a “Nonna” to all she met and made the best eggplant parmigiana.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022 at 11 AM at St. Ann Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday morning from 9 to 10:30 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 So. Main St, New Britain.
