Carlo "Carlino" Carlozzi, 80, of New Britain passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford after a nearly 4 year courageous struggle against lung cancer. Carlo was the beloved husband of Giuseppina Ricciardi Carlozzi for 57 years. Carlo, born June 18, 1929 in Campodipietra, Italy, Province of Campobasso Molise was the son of the late Francesco M.G. Carlozzi and Lucia D'Avirro Carlozzi. He immigrated to the United States in 1953 and was a lifelong resident of New Britain. He was employed at Fafnir Bearing Company, until his retirement in 1991 after 38 years of service. Besides his family, Carlo's passions were gardening and playing bocce. Carlo was an avid fan of Italian soccer and UCONN Women's Basketball and could listen to an aria and tell you the name of the Opera and the composer. Carlo was a member and officer of the Campodipietra Mutual Benefit Society and a member of the Italian Independent Political Club. To mourn his passing, Carlo leaves his two sons and a daughter, Frank M. and Jane Meyer Carlozzi of Farmington, CT; Carlo Carlozzi, Jr. of New Britain and Linda R. Carlozzi of Pelham, NY. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren whom he adored, Brian J. Carlozzi of Washington, D.C. and Amanda J. Carlozzi of New Orleans, LA. He was predeceased by his brother, Michele Carlozzi and sister-in law, Teresa Carlozzi. He also leaves two sisters, Marianna Carlozzi D'Avirro of Bologna, Italy and Rosa Carlozzi of Campobasso, Italy, as well as several sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws, Emilia Ricciardi and Amedeo Francalangia of New Britain, Serafina Ricciardi of Rome, Italy and Frank and Stella Pagano Ricciardi of Sudbury, MA. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews as well as many cousins, especially Matteo D'Avirro of Campobasso, Italy. During his struggle with lung cancer, Carlo was well cared for by a loving, dedicated and compassionate team of medical professionals. The family is extremely grateful to all those who cared for him and in particular to his long time physician Dr. Barry Steckler of New Britain, Dr John Votto and the respiratory rehabilitation therapy team at Hospital for Special Care of New Britain as well as Dr. Christopher Azzoli of Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, and the entire team at St. Francis Hospital and Cancer Center including Dr. Joerg Rathmann, Dr. Bimalin Lahiri, Dr. Thomas Freund, Dr. John Thayer, Vidya Brown, APRN, Alison Johnson, APRN, Lynn Sperini, Nella Zydanowitz, Janine, Rosalie, Cathy, Sarah and Norma, and the entire staff of 8-1. The family also wishes to thank the Visiting Nurses Association of New Britain for the care given to him. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 15th at 9:30 a.m. at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 South Main St., New Britain, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jerome Church in New Britain. Entombment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in New Britain. Calling hours will be on Friday, May 14th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home.
