Arlene H. Carlson

Arlene H. Carlson (nee Hauschulz), 90, of Plantation, Florida, passed away on March 8, 2023. She was born in New Haven, CT on January 22, 1933, to Albert and Laura Hauschulz, the youngest of five siblings. Arlene was a graduate of Wethersfield High School and the University of Connecticut and a long time resident of Covenant Living in CT and Plantation FL.

In 1956, Arlene married the love of her life, Alden Carlson, and together they raised two children. Arlene was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and a beloved member of the Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin, CT and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Ramsey, NJ, where she worshipped with her family.

In retirement Arlene and Alden enjoyed many years of traveling to Alaska, the Rockies, Bermuda, Hawaii, and numerous camping trips in the Northeast. They also enjoyed seasonal camping at Pilgrim Pines in NH where they made many friends. Pilgrim Pines was always a special place of solace for Arlene.  She remained active and continued to travel and camp until the end of her life. When she was home, she immersed herself in books, letting stories take her on more journeys from the comfort of her sofa. She loved a good love story, and there was nary a Hallmark movie she hadn’t seen. Arlene had hobbies that included collecting Longaberger baskets and Cat’s meow houses, embroidery, and candlewicking.

Arlene is survived by her two children, Susan Gay and her husband Bud, Matt Carlson and his wife Robin; three grandchildren, Laura Ludwig and her husband Russell, Sarah Gay and her fiancé Alex Healey and Alyssa Carlson. She is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Alden Carlson, sisters Gloria Libera, Nancy Aldrich and Shirley Hunter and a brother, Robert Hauschulz. Arlene will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her kind and loving nature, her adventurous spirit, and her devotion to her family will always be remembered.

A Memorial service is planned for June 3, 2023, at Bethany Covenant Church, Berlin CT at 1:30 PM. Donations in Arlene’s memory can be made to Pilgrim Pines Conference Center, 220 W. Shore Road, Swanzey, NH 03446, or https://www.pilgrimpines.org/donate
