Alfred R. Gonsalves, 78, of New Britain, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at home with his family by his side. He was the widower of Marjorie Kanupka Gonsalves. Born in New Bedford, Ma, he was the son of the late Manuel and Gloria Barboza Gonsalves. He was a New Britain resident since 1930 and was formerly employed at Rohm & Haas in Berlin, retiring in 1986. A US Navy Veteran of World War II, Alfred served on the USS Wasp aircraft carrier and received 8 Battle Stars from the Asiatic Theater. He was a plank owner of the USS Wasp and was active in the USS Wasp reunion organization. Alfred was an avid UCONN fan and fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking and making things for his family. He was a member of Kensington United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Frederick G. Gonsalves and his wife Janice of Kensington; a daughter, Rebecca G. Weller and her husband Earl of Colchester; two brothers, Albert Gonsalves of Florida and George Gonsalves of Hebron; three sisters, Phyllis Tarro of Southington, Florence Nahorney, of New Britain and Gloria Beauregard of NH; four grandchildren, Alan Moore and his wife Brooke, Andrew Moore, Daniel Gonsalves and Diane Gonsalves; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 S. Main St. New Britain and at 11:00 AM at Kensington United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 6-8 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home.
