Aflred J. Faticoni, 80, of Newington, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Netta Faticoni. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Alfred and Daisy Fuschillo Faticoni. Al lived in New Britain before moving to Newington over 30 years ago. He was formerly employed at New Britain Machine and was a member of St. Ann Church. He was a US Army and a US Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America. Al devoted his life to serving veterans through various organizations. He was a life member of AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, Italian American War Veterans, National Order of Trench Rats, the National World War II Memorial, New Britain Veterans Council, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an honorary member of Veterans Who Care Committee and a member of Catholic War Veterans. He was the recipient of the national recognized D. A. V. George H. Seal Award, one of 30 people in the country receiving this prestigious award. He was featured in the Nov/Dec 2006 issue of VANGUARD which is a national hospital magazine. He was the co-founder of the DAV transportation in CT for VA CT Healthcare System, which began in 1987. He was also featured in the national DAV magazine. Al was also the co-chairman of the Medical Centers golf fundraiser for seven years. He was also in charge of the Commemorative Wall Project, Newington Campus. In working with the contractors the commemorative wall was built for free. All the money raised went to the veterans. Al received the VAVS Volunteer of the year award, Medical Center Director's Badge of Pride and the Outstanding Service Award from VA Medical Center. He was also actively involved in the community. He helped everyone. His special interest was the DAV Transportation program and the Disabled American Veterans Organization. His common goal was to help every veteran he could. Al was a volunteer at the Newington VA Hospital where he volunteered for 48 years and compiled over 65, 000 hours. Al Faticoni was a very conscientious and diligent volunteer. His dedication, loyalty and service to the VA CT Healthcare System has been exemplary. We are ALL proud of what he has accomplished at the medical center. He will be MISSED but not forgotten. AL was recently selected to the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Governors Award, which was to be presented to him on November 20, 2007. Surviving are two brothers, Adolf Faticoni of Southington and Ted Faticoni of New Britain, his companion, Sandra Brown of Newington; his close friend and "adopted son", Joseph Canzanella of Newington; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Felice Ingram. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 8:30 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 S. Main St., New Britain followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at St. Ann Church. Burial, with military honors, will be in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington.
